Looking For Purple Perfection, Found Painful Plants and Buzzing Bees

As I was driving to work the other day, I noticed something new. On my right hand side, a field of purple flowers had appeared. I’ve driven past the same spot litterally thousands of times and never noticed anything like it. Now, I have a weakness for purple flowers. All the flowers I ever buy are purple, and I have long dreamed of shooting a purple field or meadow with my camera. Here was my chance.

So last night after dinner, I grabbed my camera bag and walked over to the area, which I have actually visited many times before. I’ve just never seen any purple flowers there. I was actually proud of myself for going out with a clear plan in mind. Unfortunately, my preparations had not included changing from shorts to long pants, so before I reached my target, I had to walk through waist deep grass and weeds, including some nasty nettles. But you have to suffer for your art, so I endured the pain and reached my destination.

My first impression was that it was exactly what I’d imagined. A couple of acres of the most beautiful purple tansies and the setting sun coming in from a great angle. So I went straight to work and started shooting, fully expecting to bring home several masterpieces. However, it soon became clear that, while the scene was beautful and good pictures were to be had, it didn’t quite live up to what I have seen in the best purple flower photography. The great compositions never quite materialized.

Coming to this unfortunate realization, I instead turned my attention to the bees. The field was buzzing with bee activity, and surely I could capture great closeups of these little wonder creatures at work. Well, out of almost 100 pictures of bees, there were maybe 10 where the bees are in focus and 5 that show them in a way that makes for a good image. They are just too fast, and the camera’s continous focus just can’t keep up in the chaotic environment.

My ankles hurting from nettle stings, I eventually headed for home where I took one of the best pictures of the evening: the midsummer sun setting between two buildings.

So Good It Looks Fake. It Isn’t.

So Good It Looks Fake. It Isn’t.

The days where everything align are few and far between, but this day was one of them. From the moment I stepped out of the car till I returned to the parking lot almost five hours later, I had been in photography heaven. The only problem was, some of the scenes I encountered were so out of this world beautiful that I fear the images will look over-enhanced. I was literally thinking that as I was shooting them: “this is too much… it doesn’t look real”. But while I always enhance my images, these are very close to what it actually looked like.

Another thing that struck me – and it’s not like I haven’t talked about this before – some of these scenes are as good as anything you will find out there in the world that you spend thousands of whatever currency you use to visit. And that’s fine. I love to travel, too. But I think most people in the world could find amazing places less than 30 minutes from their homes. All you need to do is go out there, absorb it, spend time, keep your eyes and mind open… and magic will happen.

High Hopes, Slow Start, Strong Finish

High Hopes, Slow Start, Strong Finish

That Moment Just Before the Green Explosion

That Moment Just Before the Green Explosion

It starts out as a trickle. Green leaves pop out here and there. Especially in the sunny spots on the edge of the forest or in clearings. The trickle becomes faster, and then… an explosion of green where the entire forest just seems to change color from one day to the next.

A couple of days ago, I caught the trickle in my local forest. Most of the forest is still winter brown, but green spots are starting to appear everywhere, like bright green snow flakes. In a matter of days, this delicate green advance guard will be swallowed up by an overwhelming tsunami of lush greenery that can leave you utter breathless. But for now I was more than happy to explore this early stage of spring after a long six months of brown and gray.

Sandblasted by an Easter Storm: A Beach Trip Gone… Brisk

Sandblasted by an Easter Storm: A Beach Trip Gone… Brisk

It seemed like a good idea. The weather forecast predicted very strong winds, so what could be a better way to spend Easter Sunday than go to the coast to watch the waves and feel the brisk air against our winter-pale skin – and shoot a few pictures in the proces?

While we didn’t regret our excursion, the reality was that this was a downright painful experience. Sand was blowing into our faces and felt like a thousand ant bites, and the wind chill turned a nice, sunny day into what felt like being in the middle of a polar vortex. It was impossible to go about the photography in a calculated way. You pushed your sunglasses up, looked into the viewfinder, clicked the release button, and then got your sunglasses back in place before your eyes were pierced by sand traveling through the air at high speed. Still, the images made it worth it. You may not be able to tell just how strong the wind was, but hopefully you get the idea that the beach is more than happy summer days and beautiful sunsets. The beach can be a rough place.

A Day in Gribskov’s Least Impressive Corner (But Don’t Tell the Photos)

Spring Is in the Air, I See Pictures Everywhere

Spring Is in the Air, I See Pictures Everywhere

After a long winter with lack of motivation, freezing cold weather, and too many other things to think about, spring finally exploded on the first day of March. That resulted in my first photo outing since January, and the first one I truly enjoyed since fall colors peaked in early November. The snow was gone, the sun burst through the clouds, and a new location revealed itself to me and proved that I’m not done discovering the beauty of North Sealand. And I’m not done loving being out absorbing nature through my camera and soul.

The Snowiest Winter in 15 Years and This Is All I Got

The Snowiest Winter in 15 Years and This Is All I Got

We had tons of snow this winter, and unlike most winters, it stayed on the ground for more than a month. And yet, this picture taken out my front door is the only snow picture I took this winter worth sharing. There are several reasons for this, but they all amounted to this: my motivation to go out was nonexistent. Even when I did go out, my state of mind was such that I couldn’t see the compositions. One day I walked for more than 5 miles through a snowy landscape and didn’t take a single picture. It was all just white monotony to me.

This picture of our car covered in snow, draped in blue light from our Twinkly Christmas light chain will have to stand as a sole reminder of the snowiest winter since 2011.

Fall Compressed Into One Perfect Day of Photography

Fall Compressed Into One Perfect Day of Photography

This was exactly what I needed. After a difficult summer and fall, I needed a perfect day like this. I don’t think I could have picked a better day and a better location as far as fall colors are concerned. The yellows and oranges were popping… no, exploding… and the compositions were as plentiful as they were radiant. Only downside was the more than gloomy weather, but I’m not sure I would have survived a trifecta of a perfect location, perfect timing, and perfect light. It was overwhelming enough as it was.

Chances are this was my only real fall photography outing. The season is short, and bad weather and a busy schedule are looming. But if this was it, I will be more than happy.
